a cliche line for a great f'n movie
So, ready to go to sleep...I've been monumentally exhausted for the past few days (both alcohol and mental stress have caused this breakdown). Fell asleep pretty much the second I got home and was laying in bed when I heard the old familiar PS2 motor running and a New Line Cinema theme song. Curious, I made my way out to the living room to see my roommate Steven popping in A History of Violence.
I loved this movie when it was in the theatres, and I love it even more that I watched it a second time.
Let me tell you why.
Well, it's violent, that's for sure...but it's sparsed out in the film. It's definitely not an action film, but it does have some action elements. The cinematography and the score are both sublime and stoic.....goes along very nicely with the mood and study of the film. What interests me however, is the character study of this film.
For those who do now know, this movie is roughly, about a man who breaks up a robbery in his cafe, killing two people. Someone believes he is someone else from his past, and they come back to haunt him. It tells you several things.
You past, even if it's the past, is never gone forever.
You can change who you are, but you can never change what you are capable of.
No one ever knows anyone, not that well (1 of my top 2 greatest movie lines ever, the first one is cheesy and from The Untouchables, it's my mantra so to speak).
It's violent, it's unreal, it's beautiful, it's a Cronenberg film, go watch it right now if you haven't.
Tomorrow, I tell my lawyers that I'm gone come the 30th of August, wish me luck. I'll update as to the reaction (if there is one).
